Here are some tips for developing healthy eating habits:

  1. Plan ahead: Prepare healthy meals and snacks in advance to avoid reaching for unhealthy options when you're short on time.
  2. Make half your plate fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and fibre, and experts recommend that these foods make up half of your plate at each meal.
  3. Choose whole grains: Whole grain breads, cereals, rice, and pasta provide fibre, vitamins, and minerals and are a healthier alternative to processed, refined grains.
  4. Incorporate lean protein: Lean protein sources such as chicken, fish, and legumes provide essential nutrients and can help you feel full and satisfied.
  5. Limit added sugars and unhealthy fats: Limit sugary drinks, candy, and baked goods and choose healthier fats such as olive oil, avocado, and nuts.
  6. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and limit sugary drinks, which can contribute to weight gain and other health problems.

How to drink in moderation as part of a healthy eating lifestyle

If like me you are an adult and in good general health you might like the odd drink, by which I mean alcohol consumption. Alcohol can be problematic for many reasons, not to mention adding excess calories and making your performance (whatever you're attempting...)sluggish, but this article is not about alcohol related illness just moderate drinking.

That said here are some tips you might consider for developing a healthy relationship with food and alcohol:

  1. Set limits: Decide how much and how often you want to drink and stick to your limits. It's also a good idea to take breaks from drinking periodically.
  2. Choose lower-risk options: opt for lower-alcohol content drinks, such as wine or light beer, and alternate with non-alcoholic drinks.
  3. Pair alcoholic drinks with food: Eating before and while drinking can slow down the rate of alcohol absorption into your bloodstream.
  4. Pace yourself: Sipping slowly and spacing out drinks over the course of an evening can help you avoid getting too drunk.
  5. Avoid binge drinking: Consuming copious amounts of alcohol in a brief period of time is not only dangerous but can also lead to alcohol dependency.
  6. Know your limits: It's important to know how your body reacts to alcohol and to understand when you have had enough.
  7. Don't drink and drive: Never get behind the wheel of a car if you have been drinking. Appoint a sober driver, use public transportation, or call a taxi or ride-sharing service.
  8. Seek help if necessary: If you feel that you can't control your drinking or that it's affecting your daily life, don't hesitate to seek help from a healthcare professional or a support group.
