I lived in a Very Large Victorian House in South East London. It had Front and Rear gardens. The Front Garden had a side and main entrance, the side entrance had a small but attractive iron gate, which was stolen by scrap metal merchants. So I decided to replace the small gate with a large wooden one, which would provide privacy, security and some style, in keeping with the building.
I needed to purchase material and so it was necessary to take detailed measurements of the space the gate was to occupy. The wall height would determine the size of the gate I could build, and it also required a Gate Post, so this needed an allowance. Once I had measurements I could visit B&Q to purchase Materials.
I purchased enough wood to construct a 6 by 3 foot gate, you can of course purchase ready made gates, but because I had an awkward shaped side entrance, with odd side walls either side I chose to make it instead. Ready built gates cost about 60 from B&Q or similar merchants, but the wood can cost significantly less, but time to build and parts will add to the cost significantly. I needed screws, security bolt, hinges, latch, tape measure, drill and drill driver and a spirit level. Paint and varnish or sealant is also required for outdoor protection from rain and elements.
